The Design Process For Our Watercolor Save The Dates
-
Coming Up With The Idea
+First and foremost, every stunning piece of watercolor artwork starts with an idea. Inspiration that drives us to create our pieces. That inspiration can come from watching a classic film, spending the day in nature, or even couples themselves. We are inspired by all things and enjoy taking this inspiration into the design process.
Most of our designs will start life using good old paper and pencil, but it’s not unusual to see us putting ideas together more digitally. Whether that’s using our computers to get quite technical, or sketching an idea on a tablet. No matter the medium we use, it's all about turning our ideas into a reality.
Our small design team spends hours researching, looking for inspiration, then utilizing that inspiration to create something truly remarkable.

Titivate The Design
+Once we have a clear idea, a different kind of art creation process takes place. Titivation of the initial concept. Usually this involves adjusting the design to see its possibilities. Will it work as a save the date card? How about a wedding welcome sign? Can we adjust the spacing to make it more readable? What colors will work best in each scenario. Our titivation process is highly detailed and allows us to refine the artwork to create the desired look.
We are working to bring our vision to life however it's important to remember the medium in which we are creating. Weddings. We are crafting products for our couples, not for ourselves. Ensuring each and every piece of art we create is perfect for our couples, is the goal we always strive towards.
-
Convert To Save The Date Format
+As I’ve mentioned, our primary goal is creating beautiful wedding stationery. Once our watercolor artwork has been created, it's time to convert to a save the date format. This can be as simple as cleaning the sky to allow a readable text. Perhaps it may involve creating a more suitable color palette to match the overall wedding invitation suite. Maybe it involves adding whitespace for the important details. Each and every piece of watercolor art is different and converting each design into a suitable save the date format, is one of the most important aspects of our design process.
It is our designers goal to create watercolor save the date that invokes a harmony between the art and the information. We strive to create a balance. A balance that is aesthetically and functionally rich. This will result in a wedding save the date that your guests and yourselves will truly love.
-

How Far In Advance Should I Send Out My Save The Dates?
+At least 6 months prior to your wedding date. 8-10 months if you are being cautious. This should give your guests enough time to respond, while also not allowing too much time that they might forget (unlikely).
In all seriousness, being prepared and allowing plenty of time before your wedding date is important. Many guests may have to arrange childcare, perfect book travel and accommodation for your day. Consider your guests and their requirements before deciding when to send you save the dates out.

What Type Of Paper For Watercolor?
+Choosing the right paper for your watercolor save the dates is vitally important. It was also a massive part of our process when we started creating the artwork. We tested hundreds of different paper types before concluding in a selection of 5-6 paper stocks. We believed these chosen papers best highlighted the watercolor style.
All our papers have a luxurious feel but also that little bit of rustic feel, perfect for the natural feel of watercolor. They also come in two colors, a warm white (most popular) and an ice white (perfect for very colorful designs).
For watercolor invites, we would recommend choosing our Premium Heavyweight Textured cart. It’s a slight addition in price however is just perfect at showcasing your wonderful watercolor prints.
-
Can I Include A Personal Message On My Save The Dates?
+Absolutely! You can customize all the important details such as names and wedding dates on the product page. Just input your information and we will be able to create your custom design. However, if you wish to add something a little more specific, simply add a note to your order on the checkout page. Alternatively you can email us directly at [email protected].
Including a personal message on your invites adds a heartfelt touch to your prints. It allows you to create a beautiful watercolor design that is truly unique to you.

Do I Need To Send Save The Dates To All Guests?
+Yes, no, maybe! It can get a little tricky on who you actually need to send save the date cards out to. First and foremost, it’s important to understand that you don’t need to provide a save the date to every individual guest, just every individual household. For example, send one save the date to a family of four that you plan to invite to your wedding day.
In addition, you may not need to send out save the dates to people you speak to regularly, you can simply tell them in person. That being said, it’s always nice to receive a save the date and can help to make all guests feel special and included. Plus, wouldn’t you want to share your stunning watercolor save the date with as many people as possible? We would!
In all seriousness, sending a save the date card out to out of town guests, or guests that may need to make special arrangements for your day, is very important. It gives them extra time to ensure plans are put in place, allowing them to attend your special day.

Painted Scene/Venue Invitations
+Landscape scene watercolor save the dates are also popular. For us, our Chatham and Bergamo collections are often picked by our brides, often being paired with a matching invitation suite.
Most couples opt for a scene that best represents the location of their wedding day. For example, if a couple is choosing an outdoor countryside wedding, a beautiful rolling hill scene is a good way to go.
-
Watercolor Borders
+Watercolor Save The Date cards come in all styles and mediums. Our most popular watercolor save the dates tend to be our minimalist designs where a watercolor illustration adds to the print, but does not overshadow it. For example, our Monreale and Marblehead designs are very popular.
One of the most common watercolor styles is the bordered designs. Usually a beautiful watercolor pattern wraps the important information of your wedding day. Cortona and Ashlands are good examples of this.
-
Floral & Botanical Watercolor Invitations
+Flowers have long been associated with weddings especially when it comes to save the date and inviting cards. One of the major benefits of choosing floral, is their versatility. You can choose an exact flower that matches your theme or you can opt for a more minimalist approach such as Monreale.
Another approach would be to choose a really creative design, such as Giverny. Giverny is colorful, bright and perfect for joyful couples choosing to have a truly creative wedding day.
One of the major benefits of choosing a floral watercolor design is the fact that floral designs tend to stand the test of time. Floral designs, especially in weddings, tend to feel timeless.
-
Modern & Creative Style Watercolor Save The Dates
+Couples after a more contemporary look might think they should stay clear of the more traditional watercolor medium! However, fear not, watercolor is just a method of creating a design, you can still craft contemporary and modern pieces using watercolor. Just look at our Madison collection. Does this look outdated to you? Didn’t think so!
While creative design is generally decided in the eye of the beholder, it would usually consist of bright colors, alternatively styled illustrations, and generally anything outside of a traditional watercolor style painting. Many of our designs include these approaches and are perfect for the modern, creatively inclined couple.
