An outdoor Ceremony location like no other, surrounded by towering spruce trees and snow capped mountains, it really is something else.
If you admire breathtaking scenery (and who doesn’t) then Khayla and Ryan’s mountain top wedding will be right up your street. Perched at 10,500 feet in the Colorado mountains, the San Sophia Overlook allows you to get married whilst taking in the views of the town of Telluride as well as Wilson Peak. A short gondola ride to the ceremony will be an experience your guests aren’t likely to forget in a hurry.

San Sophia Overlook Wedding in Telluride
How were your photographers for your wedding?
Our photographers were amazing! They did everything possible to get the best photos. We truly appreciated their work on the day as well as the final edited images! Our wedding was such a long day and they were with us from start to finish. They captured the Bridal preparations at Hotel Madeline as well as Ryan and his Groomsmen enjoying some early morning Dutch courage at the Tomboy Tavern. These were some of our favourite shots from the wedding that we hadn’t considered would be that important but they really set the scene for the day. Our absolute favourite photos though are from the photo shoot. We got to have a few moments to ourselves away from the wedding and enjoy some of the gorgeous scenery that Telluride has to offer. Our photographers took us out at the perfect time (i think it’s called golden hour) and we were treated to a crazy sunset that we otherwise might have missed! Book them, you won’t regret it!
How did you meet one another?
We met in college during our senior year. A mutual friend introduced us at our town bar. We IMMEDIATELY started dating. Our friend did the best job of matchmaking and we can’t thank them enough!
What was the Inspiration behind your big day?
We always knew that we wanted an outdoor wedding after seeing so many gorgeous examples online. Getting married on a mountain top at 10,000 feet is something else and we can’t quite believe we pulled it off. The views are obviously stunning and it’s a unique experience for your guest that they’ll never forget. The gondola ride to the top, the gorgeous scenery and the amazing food, it really was a dream come true.
What was the stylistic theme and goal for your wedding?
Boho, natural, romantic. The location really spoke for itself so we kept things quite simple at the ceremony. As for the reception we used a bit more creative flair inspired by things we had seen on Pinterest and Instagram. We used flowers and eucalyptus to line the center of the tables. We kept the menu nice and simple but added our personalised wax seal.
Favourite stories from the day?
One hour after the ceremony, it started to snow making the reception so gorgeous. Luckily there was a lovely cosy vibe to our reception, the snow just made it perfect.
Favourite moments from the day?
Khayla: My favorite part was the ceremony and seeing Ryan at the altar. There was quite a long walk from the room I was waiting in to the altar and I was super nervous. Walking across that mountain with a loved one meant the world to me. To then be handed over to someone I also adore was the best moment of my life.
Ryan: The same for me, the Ceremony was just something else. I had similar feelings of nerves but a lot of the guests kept me occupied. When I turned around to see Khayla I couldn’t hold in my emotions any longer. I second Khayla’s words, it was the best moment of my life.
What was the most expensive part of your wedding?
We decided to spend extra on a videographer. Everyone we spoke to whilst planning the wedding had advised us to hire one and it was not a mistake. It helps capture those moments that we otherwise might have missed or forgotten. It also meant we could share our special moments with people who couldn’t make it on the day. Both the highlights and feature films were beautifully shot and edited. They worked well with the photographers to get the best possible shots and we will treasure those films forever.
Any money saving advice for future couples?
We saved some money by not doing an exit at the end of the night. The main reason for this was because we would have had to stop the party early to do this and we love to party haha. It saved us from buying confetti cannons or sparklers. Most of all though it meant we could spend more time with our guests.
Anything you would have done differently?
We probably would have hired a DJ instead of a band. This would have meant we had much more control over the songs we danced to. That being said, it didn’t stop us having so much fun.
Advice for couples getting married?
I know lots of people say this but it goes by so fast. It’s like Christmas when you’re 6. Enjoy the day! Make sure to have fun with your guests but also enjoy the day with each other. That’s why the photoshoot was so good. It was a nice breather in the middle of the day where we could just spend 30-60 minutes in each other’s company.
